RECOMMENDED READINGS - VINIYOGA
Yoga for your life, Margaret and Martin Pierce.
Nice introduction to the physical practice of viniyoga for beginners. Easy to follow practices. Use between classes. Nice pictures of students modeling the practice-people like you and me! Doesn’t talk much about the philosophy of yoga.
Yoga for Wellness, Gary Kraftsow.
Gary has been my teacher since 2000. He has studied yoga for nearly 30 years. He has traveled many times to India to study with Desikachar (see below). Yoga for Wellness is the book I use to design our practices. A gem that explains in great details the art of yoga therapy. For those who want to understand the design of a balanced asana (posture) practice. However, the practices in this book were designed to explain certain principles or are case-studies. I wouldn’t use them as my daily practice.
Yoga for Transformation, Gary Kraftsow.
My favorite! Yoga for transformation builds on the principles that we learned in Yoga for Wellness and dives deeper in the philosophy of yoga. The practices in this book are balanced practices that can be done on a regular basis, except for contraindications…
The Heart of Yoga: Developing a personal practice, T.K.V.Desikachar.
Desikachar is Gary’s teacher and Krishnamacharya’s son.
This book is another one of my favorites. Less practices, more information on the philosophy of yoga. Part of the book is in the form of an interview with Desikachar. The heart of yoga also contains Patanjali’s yoga sutras, the first written summary of the philosophy of yoga, written sometimes at the beginning of this era. At the end of the book are 4 practices that can be used daily.
Health, Healing and Beyond. Yoga and the living tradition of Krishnamacharya, T.K.V Desikachar.
Desikachar shares what he knows about his father (who was also his yoga teacher for 30 years). Beautiful book about the life of the person I consider to be the greatest yogi of our time. Krishnamacharya died in 1989 at the age of 100. He was the teacher of Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, Indra Devi…
Emotional yoga, Bija Bennett.
Bija uses the tools that she learned in viniyoga and applies them to bring us to emotional and spiritual balance. A must read after you have learned the basics of the philosophy of yoga.
The Essence of Yoga, Bernard Bouanchaud. Translation of the yoga sutras of Patanjali.
