With so many choices of activities for our children, why Yoga for Kids? Even though they have more comfort and material possessions than our grandparents could ever dream of when they were little, 21st century children also have more stress than ever before. The hurried pace of our modern life and  the academic and social pressures kids are exposed to are only compounded by the competitive nature of many sports and after school activities.  Yoga for Kids offers a healthy way to release this stress and develop awareness, strength, flexibility, acceptance and calm in a fun, non-competitive environment.

The many benefits of Yoga for Kids include:

*Encourages the balanced growth of children, alleviates growing pains, and reduces the risk of sports-related injuries by stretching and strengthening all muscle groups.

*Helps digestion and elimination and encourages healthy function of all glands and organs.

* Enhances coordination, flexibility, and body awareness.

*Balances the nervous system and allows children to develop coping mechanism to deal with stressful situations.

*Encourages healthy self-esteem.

* Fosters cooperation and compassion rather than comparison and competition. Accessible to all body types and physical abilities.

* May help reduce symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

*Fosters imagination and respect for all life.

*Brings to the surface the inherently joyful nature of all children!

The class begins with warm-ups and sharing. Traditional yoga postures are linked to mindful breathing. A short guided relaxation is followed by breath work. This is a non-sectarian, non-religious class. This class is open to children 7-12 years old. Students should dress in comfortable clothing that does not restrict breathing; we suggest martial arts pants for boys and martial arts pants or leotards and tights for girls.

Class is taught by MiMi Mears, adoptive mother, Massage Therapist, and Registered Yoga teacher since 1997. MiMi is certified in Let’s Play Yoga and Radiant Child Yoga, levels 1 and 2. She is assisted by her 9-year-old son, Bastien. Before moving to Texas, MiMi taught French for 4 years at Summer Grove Elementary in Shreveport, Louisiana. She holds a teacher’s degree in Foreign Languages from her native country, Belgium.
